The Federal Government has introduced a free healthcare programme for pensioners earning less than ₦70,000 monthly, in a move aimed at easing the financial burden on retired Nigerians struggling with medical expenses.
The initiative, known as PenCare, was launched through the National Pension Commission (PenCom) as part of efforts to improve the welfare and healthcare access of low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
According to PenCom, the programme is specifically targeted at pensioners aged 60 years and above who receive monthly pensions of ₦70,000 or below through registered Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).
Officials disclosed that about 30,000 pensioners nationwide will benefit from the first phase of the scheme on a first-come, first-served basis.
Speaking on the development, PenCom explained that the healthcare programme was designed to help vulnerable retirees cope with rising medical costs and the economic challenges currently affecting the country.
The commission described the initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, noting that many elderly pensioners face difficulties accessing quality healthcare due to limited income and increasing living expenses.
Under the programme, qualified beneficiaries will receive free medical care and healthcare support through approved medical facilities participating in the scheme.
Registration for the healthcare programme has reportedly commenced through the PenCom portal and participating PFAs across the country. Eligible pensioners have been advised to apply early due to the limited number of available slots.
The launch of the scheme has been welcomed by many Nigerians, especially pensioners and labour groups, who have repeatedly called on the government to strengthen social welfare support for retirees.
