Gov. Sim Fubara Reportedly Withdraws From 2027 Rivers Governorship Race

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reportedly withdrawn from the 2027 Rivers State governorship race, a development that may significantly reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections.

According to emerging reports, Fubara stepped down from the governorship contest following consultations with political stakeholders and allies. The reports claim the decision was taken in the interest of maintaining peace and political stability in Rivers State amid the lingering crisis within the state’s political structure.

The reported withdrawal comes after months of political tension between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The rivalry between both political figures has dominated Rivers politics since late 2023, leading to divisions within the state assembly and the ruling political structure.

Sources familiar with the development alleged that Fubara’s decision may be connected to broader political negotiations involving key national leaders, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, there has been no official statement from the Presidency confirming any agreement or political arrangement linked to the governor’s reported withdrawal.

Fubara became governor in 2023 after succeeding Wike under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, their political relationship later deteriorated, triggering one of the most talked-about political crises in Rivers State in recent years.
