“He wasn’t supposed to seek a second term” – Wike speaks on Fubara’s withdrawal from governorship race

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the withdrawal of Siminalayi Fubara from the governorship race.

Speaking on the development, Wike said he was not surprised by Fubara’s decision, claiming there had already been an agreement concerning the governor’s political future.

“I am not surprised that Governor Fubara withdrew. In the first place, he ought not have collected the governorship form because an agreement was reached that the impeachment against him would be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second term,” Wike said.

According to the former Rivers State governor, part of the alleged agreement was that Fubara would not seek a second term in office.

The statement has further stirred political discussions in Rivers State amid the lingering crisis involving key political stakeholders in the state.

Wike’s remarks come after Fubara announced his withdrawal from the governorship primary election of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, declaring support for whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum across the country, observers say the unfolding events in Rivers State may play a significant role in shaping future political alignments.
