“I Feel Like a Chief Security Officer Without Real Power” – APM Candidate Makinde Raises Alarm Over Security Role

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate, Makinde, has voiced strong concern over what he describes as the limited authority given to political leaders in addressing security challenges, saying he feels like a “Chief Security Officer without real power.”

Makinde made the comment while speaking on the growing insecurity in parts of the country, stressing that elected officials are often expected to deliver security outcomes without having full control over the agencies responsible for enforcement and intelligence operations.

According to him, this gap between responsibility and authority places leaders in a difficult position, where they are held accountable for issues they cannot directly resolve. He noted that the current structure makes it challenging to respond effectively to rising security threats, especially at sub-national levels.

He further explained that unless meaningful reforms are introduced to give more operational control or improve coordination among security institutions, the fight against insecurity may continue to face setbacks despite ongoing efforts and policy discussions.

Makinde’s remarks have added to the ongoing national debate on security restructuring, with many observers arguing that clearer roles and better-defined powers are needed to improve accountability and efficiency in governance.
