The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has said that he believes the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is dead.
Akpabio said this at the plenary on Tuesday while reading a letter from Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the lawmaker representing Abia South Senatorial District.
Abaribe had in his letter to the Senate indicated his decision to dump the ADC for the Labour Party.
He said he was defecting to the Labour Party due to “the now known leadership crisis rocking the ADC occasioned by the multiple legal issues rocking the party.”
The Abia lawmaker also noted that his defection is with immediate effect.
However, reading Abaribe’s letter to the lawmakers, Akpabio said there might be a need for all intending defectors to compile their names in one list.
His words, “Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper and bring it so that we don’t keep announcing and announcing.
“Well, I think ADC is dead,” Akpabio said.
Also, when queried on how many times a lawmaker can defect from one party to the other, the Senate President said such political moves can only be restricted if there is a provision for such in the law.
“I am ready to keep announcing but let us compile all so that it doesn’t become a daily ritual.
“Let’s compile the names, if you’re defecting from Labour, you write the names of all you; if you’re going from ADC, you write. And if you’re entering NDC, you write all of you.
“It is neater that way than presenting one name each time,” he advised.
Alongside Abaribe, the Senator representing Anambra Central senatorial district, Victor Umeh also announced his resignation from the ADC.
Umeh according to his letter said he was dumping the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) due to its leadership crisis.
