Kaduna state government has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism as the global community marks the 2026 World Press Freedom (WPF) Day.

The day, themed “Shaping a Future at Peace,” is being commemorated worldwide, with global reflections anchored by the UNESCO conference in Lusaka.

In a statement, the state government said the theme highlights the critical role of a free, independent and responsible media in promoting peace, protecting human rights and advancing sustainable development.

The government noted that in Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State, the media remains a key pillar of democratic governance through informing citizens, shaping public discourse and strengthening accountability.

It stated that the administration of Uba Sani has continued to uphold the constitutional guarantee of press freedom by creating an enabling environment for journalists to operate professionally.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the governor’s stance reflects a firm belief in the role of the media in sustaining democracy and peace.

“Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to press freedom reflects a firm belief that a free, responsible and credible media is indispensable to peace, good governance and democratic stability,” he said.

Maiyaki added that the rising challenge of misinformation and disinformation has made ethical and professional journalism more important than ever.

“As misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust and national cohesion, ethical, accurate and professional journalism remains non-negotiable,” he said, adding that the state would continue to support journalists while promoting accountability in the media space.

The government further reiterated its commitment to protecting media practitioners, strengthening collaboration with stakeholders and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing professionalism and countering misinformation.

It urged journalists and other stakeholders to uphold the values of truth, responsibility and mutual respect as foundations for a peaceful and democratic society.
