The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a flexible rent payment system that will allow residents to pay rent monthly, quarterly, or yearly, in a move aimed at reducing the financial burden on tenants across the state.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, during a ministerial press briefing held in Ikeja. According to the commissioner, the new initiative is part of the government’s efforts to make housing more affordable and accessible for Lagos residents.
Under the proposed system, tenants will no longer be forced to pay huge lump sums for two years or more before securing accommodation. Instead, residents will have the option of spreading their rent payments monthly, every three months, or annually, with yearly payments expected not to exceed one year.
Akinderu-Fatai explained that the government understands the economic challenges facing many Nigerians, especially in Lagos where rent prices have continued to rise due to increasing demand for housing and the high cost of living.
He noted that the initiative is designed to ease pressure on salary earners, small business owners, and low-income families who often struggle to raise large amounts for rent at once.
According to the commissioner, the flexible rent payment structure is being developed based on the success of the state’s rent-to-own housing scheme, which allows beneficiaries to make an initial payment and spread the balance over several years.
The Lagos State Government said discussions are currently ongoing with landlords, property developers, estate agents, and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the policy.
Officials are also working on possible regulations and monitoring mechanisms that will help protect both tenants and property owners under the new arrangement.
