Lagosians in diaspora endorse Hamzat for gov

A coalition of Lagosians in the diaspora has endorsed the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, to succeed his principal, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, citing his experience in governance and contributions to the development of the state.

The Lagosians residing across the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East noted that Hamzat’s involvement in governance initiatives positioned him as a capable leader to sustain and expand ongoing reforms in Lagos.

The global coalition endorsed Hamzat as their preferred All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Lagos ahead of the primaries scheduled for May 21, 2027, during a press conference held in London on Monday, according to a statement made available to NGBREAKINGNEWS Online.

Speaking during the event, the acting Global Director and Convener of Lagos Diaspora for Hamzat 2027, Ayodeji Tinubu, added Hamzat’s administrative experience and understanding of the state’s challenges make him suitable for higher leadership responsibilities.

Tinubu described the deputy governor as a highly competent, exceptionally prepared leader capable of preserving policy continuity.

“We are gathered here not merely for political ceremony, but for a historic to support competence, continuity, loyalty, capacity, vision, and progressive governance in Lagos State

“Today, we proudly announce that the entire diaspora structure under Lagos Diaspora for Hamzat 2027 is fully prepared to mobilise massive political, strategic, intellectual, media, grassroots, and diplomatic support across global networks for the candidacy of Dr. Obafemi Hamzat,” he said.

Tinubu, who was also a Chairmanship aspirant for the Lagos Mainland Local Government, noted that Hamzat’s stellar track record as deputy governor makes him uniquely qualified to succeed Sanwo-Olu.

“Over the years, Dr. Hamzat has demonstrated these qualities consistently through service, humility, and dedication. As deputy governor, he has shown himself to be a calm, intelligent, and solutions-driven administrator who deeply understands governance, infrastructure, education, technology, transportation, and the economic realities of modern urban development. Importantly, he understands Lagos,” Tinubu said.

He emphasised that as major stakeholders, diasporan Lagosian want a safer, smarter, and economically stronger Lagos that bridges local realities with global standards.

Justifying the coalition’s early mobilisation, Tinubu maintained that the economic stakes for Nigeria’s commercial nerve center are too high for political trial-and-error.

“Our support is based on results. Politics should not only be about noise or popularity; it should be about capacity and tangible outcomes. Lagos cannot afford experimentation. Lagos requires steady hands and strategic minds,” he insisted.

Recall that the Governance Advisory Council had adopted Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the party’s consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The decision was reached at a meeting where all 21 members of the council were present and unanimously endorsed his candidature.

President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have also publicly expressed support for Hamzat’s aspiration.

Following the adoption, Hamzat formally submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2027 governorship race.
