Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has opened up about his unconventional approach to proposing marriage to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Timeless Podcast aired on YouTube, the singer said he deliberately avoided the traditional act of going down on one knee during his proposal.
According to him, marriage should be seen as a mutual agreement between two partners rather than a one-sided gesture of submission.
He explained that he and his wife approached the decision as equals, stressing that neither party was “begging” the other to stay in the relationship.
In his words, he said the proposal was based on understanding and partnership, not ceremony or pressure.
Made Kuti and Inedoye Onyenso, who had a long-standing relationship dating back to their school days, eventually tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony held in Lagos in November 2023.
The musician has also previously spoken out against criticism surrounding their inter-ethnic marriage, describing such sentiments as outdated and rooted in what he called “slave mentality.”
His latest comments have sparked discussions online, with many debating modern relationship values versus traditional proposal customs.
