The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced the launch of Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme in partnership with Interferry, as part of efforts to strengthen safety standards and operational efficiency across Lagos waterways.

In a statement, LASWA said the 18-month programme is structured to improve ferry safety practices, deepen technical competence and promote professionalism among operators within the state’s water transport ecosystem.

According to the agency, participants will receive mentorship from Interferry experts, supported by facilitators drawn from maritime institutions, private maritime companies and regulatory bodies in Nigeria.

LASWA disclosed that an intake verification exercise for applicants was concluded on March 18, 2026, ensuring that all selected candidates met the programme’s eligibility and compliance requirements.

A total of 50 participants have been admitted into the inaugural cohort, comprising ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers and technicians, safety officers, compliance professionals and fleet managers.

The agency noted that the curriculum will cover key areas including ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, preventive and predictive maintenance, as well as operational best practices.

LASWA further stated that the programme will adopt a hybrid learning model combining self-paced online modules, virtual mentoring sessions and monthly hands-on training. Classes are scheduled to commence in May 2026.

The official launch ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the LASWA Head Office in Ikoyi, Lagos, and will feature programme briefings, mentor and participant introductions, and stakeholder engagement sessions.

LASWA described the initiative as a strategic step towards achieving safer waterways and building a globally competitive ferry transportation system in Lagos.
