“In western Kenya, some communities among the Luhya people, especially the Bukusu, have a unique tradition of burying highly respected elders and spiritual leaders in a standing position instead of laying them down as is commonly practiced.
According to the customs of the community, this type of burial symbolizes strength, protection, courage, and preparation for life after death. The body is buried facing east or toward the family homestead,” the caption read.
Church members surround graveyard
The video captured the final stage of the burial ceremony, showing the unusual way the deceased was laid to rest.
Church members were present at the scene, with a priest leading them in a final song as they bid farewell to one of their members.
They wore uniforms representing their faith and denomination as they stood with the bereaved family during the difficult moment.

At that point, the deceased, who had been preserved in a white coffin, was carefully removed by pallbearers as preparations were made for the burial.
A narrow grave had been dug, large enough only to accommodate the body without the coffin.
The pallbearers carefully carried the body to the grave and positioned it upright before slowly lowering it into the resting place.
