Only Desmond Elliott Refused to Step Down for Me — Lagos Assembly Aspirant Bakare-Odunuga

Before the 2027 general elections, Bakare-Odunuga will challenge Assembly incumbent Desmond Elliott, seeking a fourth term.…....

“The others stepped down and are supporting me and they’re all here, but the only person that didn’t step down and insisted on going to the primaries is Hon. Desmond Elliott. I wish him all the best, and I wish myself luck too,” she said.

At a political meeting in Surulere on Sunday, the former assistant stated numerous candidates had dropped out and endorsed her, leaving Elliott as the only candidate still running in the APC primary election on May 20.

Leading APC figures, party sympathisers, and political allies attended the event at The Stable in Surulere’s Bode Thomas neighbourhood as a show of strength before the primaries.

Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, and Fuad Laguda, House member for Surulere Federal Constituency, attended.

Several party loyalists and supporters voiced their support for Bakare-Odunuga, while some aspirants reportedly withdrew in her favour.

Aregbe promised his structure and followers will speak with “one voice” during the primaries, while Laguda asked APC members in the constituency to support her.

A former Elliott campaign official reportedly withdrew from the lawmaker’s re-election campaign to support Bakare-Odunuga’s, bringing loud cheers from fans.

After receiving the endorsements, Bakare-Odunuga told fans that Surulere was more than a political constituency and that she would represent it well.

Subulere is a covenant, not just a constituency. She said, “I’m making a covenant with every man, woman, trader, student, and elder in this great land today.”

She promised to prioritise infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment if elected to the Assembly.

“I will not go to that hallowed chamber to warm a seat,” she said.

Her statement comes amid escalating friction in Surulere’s APC branch before the primary election.

Elliott claimed intimidation, political victimisation, and the removal of his security aides before the drill in a viral video.

The actor-turned-politician accused unnamed party leaders and local government officials of pressing members to support a particular candidate, deepening party splits.

He also said some of his fans had suffered political retribution for their commitment.
