A viral video showing a Nigerian police officer identified as Newton Isokpehi threatening to shoot and kill anyone who records him while on duty has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over police conduct and accountability in the country.
In the widely circulated clip on Wednesday, Isokpehi—who claimed to have served in the Nigeria Police Force for 26 years—issued violent warnings to members of the public, insisting that he would open fire on anyone who attempts to film him during operations.
Speaking largely in Pidgin English, the officer was seen repeatedly cautioning civilians against recording him, while also directing anger at senior officers he accused of encouraging such actions.
“If anybody come video me when I dey on duty with my rifle… I go clear everybody,” he said in the video, adding that anyone who defies him “will be buried” by those who gave the instruction to film police officers.
He further warned that an entire bus or group of bystanders could be “wiped out” if he is recorded while carrying out his duties.
In another part of the footage, Isokpehi appeared visibly agitated as he displayed scars on his arm, which he claimed were bullet wounds sustained in the line of duty.
He also lamented poor welfare conditions for police officers, though he acknowledged recent efforts by the Inspector-General of Police to address outstanding insurance and death benefit payments.
The officer also lashed out at unnamed superior officers, warning that those allegedly directing citizens to record police personnel would “face serious consequences.”
The video, which also carried an ironic “God bless police” overlay, was reportedly first posted on his TikTok account identified as @actor459 (“Newton isokpehi for life”), where he has previously shared content featuring himself in police uniform. The account has since deleted the clip, although it remains active.
The development has since sparked outrage across social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the implications of such threats from a serving security officer and calling for urgent disciplinary action.
