ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has questioned whether President Bola Tinubu is insulating himself in Aso Rock to pave the way for an indefinite stay in power, arguing that the actions of his administration point toward self-preservation rather than public service.…....
Speaking on Channels Television, Okonkwo made this observation while criticizing Tinubu’s three years in office, saying that it had been marked by economic decline and insecurity. He stated that the only item the president had delivered on was borrowing, noting that the government had exceeded its borrowing targets while production in the real economy continued to collapse.
According to him, Nigeria’s reliance on debt without a productive base is pushing the country toward insolvency, as small and medium businesses shut down due to lack of power and other basic support.
On security, Okonkwo said Nigeria had become one of the most terrorized countries globally, with citizens unable to move freely without fear.
He cited repeated attacks in Plateau, Benue, Kwara, Niger, and parts of the Southwest and Southeast and accused the president of failing to visit affected communities or provide decisive leadership.
He added that terrorists now appeared to be operating with greater coordination, targeting infrastructure and security forces. Okonkwo said his main concern was that Tinubu seemed focused on protecting himself and his family from the consequences of these failures.
He pointed to the allocation of billions for solar power in the Presidential Villa as evidence that the government was insulating itself from the power crisis affecting ordinary Nigerians. He warned that moves to alter legislative rules to secure political positions could be a precursor to constitutional changes aimed at extending Tinubu’s tenure.
In his words, “And something is troubling me in that particular issue. Have you not noticed that it looks like he is building Aso Rock to become a life president? Why are you insulating yourself from the problems of society?”
“Can’t you see the amount of security that his own family members are using when they are going on the road? That even Wole Soyinka said is enough to go and fight to stop a killing in another country.”
