UN releases $60M to combat Ebola outbreak in DR Congo

The United Nations (UN) has committed $60 million from its emergency response fund to help fight a deadly Ebola outbreak that is spreading across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and nearby regions.

The UN announced the funding in a Facebook post on Friday, May 22. Authorities will use the money to strengthen key measures aimed at stopping the virus.

These efforts include tracing people who may have been exposed, establishing treatment centres, and increasing public education and community engagement to reduce infections.

The outbreak, which is centred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has already caused significant concern among health officials. So far, authorities have recorded about 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths, prompting urgent action from both local and international health agencies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. The declaration highlights the seriousness of the crisis and the need for a coordinated global response.

Health experts say the outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare but highly dangerous form of the virus. Unlike the more common Zaire strain, there is currently no approved vaccine for Bundibugyo Ebola.

Medical experts estimate that the virus kills about one in every three people it infects, making rapid containment efforts essential.

Response teams are expected to focus on quickly identifying new cases, isolating infected individuals, and educating communities about how the disease spreads. Health officials believe these measures will help limit transmission and save lives.
