Femi Otubanjo, a research professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs specialising in international relations and strategic studies, has claimed that former president Olusegun Obasanjo had near-total control over the Peoples Democratic Party’s policymaking during his presidency.…....
While speaking with Arise News, Otubanjo recalled the inner workings of the PDP and the leadership style that defined it under Obasanjo’s presidency. The former president, in his view, was the party’s key decision-maker during that time.
When Obasanjo was in charge, he was the only one who could see the big picture. During the interview, Otubanjo acknowledged it, but he also admitted that he was a tyrant.
The professor made his comments as part of a larger conversation regarding party structure, leadership culture, and the development of political parties in Nigeria’s pursuit of democracy since 1999. He said that the PDP had lost some of its strategic direction and control under Obasanjo’s leadership, which had also severely limited opportunities for internal democracy and group decision-making.
