The World Health Organization has declared an Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The outbreak, concentrated in Ituri province, has recorded about 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths, with eight confirmed infections.
The virus is the Bundibugyo strain, for which there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments. Cases have also been confirmed in Uganda, including a fatal one. WHO warned of potential wider spread due to insecurity, population movement, and limited healthcare capacity.
Key Points:
No approved vaccines or treatments exist for this Ebola strain, complicating containment.
Cases in Uganda confirm cross-border transmission, raising regional alarm.
Ongoing insecurity in eastern DRC hinders health workers’ access to affected zones.
WHO advises against border closures, saying they are not scientifically justified.
This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in DRC since 1976, showing repeated flare-ups.
