The man, who spoke to Citizen TV, said he accepted what appeared to be a routine political assignment, only to discover that the group’s destination had changed by the time they reached Nairobi’s city centre.

According to him, recruitment began a day earlier, when a coordinator approached several young men with an offer of KSh 2,000 each. Their instructions were simple: secure motorcycles, pair up and be ready for deployment the following morning.

“We were told there was an event linked to Rigathi Gachagua in town,” he said.

However, events took an unexpected turn after the group assembled on Friday. Instead of proceeding to the initially mentioned venue, they were allegedly directed towards All Saints Cathedral, where civil society activists and members of the public had gathered for a discussion on the national budget.

The man claimed that several individuals he identified as plain-clothes police officers accompanied the group and appeared to be directing activities on the ground.

He alleged that concerns quickly emerged after their arrival, especially after they realised that the church had CCTV cameras.

Fearing that their movements could be captured on camera, those leading the operation reportedly ordered the riders to leave the area and relocate to a nearby construction site.

“When we arrived, one of us saw the CCTV cameras and we became concerned. The officers with us felt the place was too exposed,” he said.

According to the witness, members of the group soon realised that surveillance cameras were also installed at the alternative site. The discovery allegedly triggered panic among organisers, forcing them to abandon the mission altogether.

As confusion spread, participants reportedly dispersed without carrying out the assignment. The man claimed many left frustrated after failing to receive the money they had been promised.

His greatest concern now, he said, is that attention has shifted to those hired for the job rather than those who allegedly organised it. While claiming the operation was commissioned by an MP, he said investigators are now pursuing the recruits.

“We never imagined it would reach this point. Now police are looking for people who were involved,” he said.

He further alleged that some members of the group have already been arrested as authorities continue investigating the incident.
