The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing of four suspected members of a secessionist armed group during a joint security operation in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
According to the command, the operation was carried out on June 23, 2026, along the Ogboji–Ajalli Road following credible intelligence on the movement of armed criminals within the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that operatives attached to a Joint Security Patrol Team engaged the suspects in a fierce gun battle. Four members of the group were neutralised during the exchange of fire, while several others reportedly escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
Security operatives recovered a significant cache of weapons and other items believed to have been used in criminal activities. Recovered exhibits included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with 53 rounds of linked ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, loaded magazines, several rounds of live ammunition, and four undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Other items recovered from the scene included police camouflage uniforms and accessories, a white Toyota Sienna vehicle suspected to have been stolen, mobile phones, a laptop computer, ATM cards, a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine, power banks, identification documents, assorted charms, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The police said preliminary investigations suggest that the gang was involved in various criminal activities within and outside the state. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to dismantle the group’s remaining network.
