Arrangements have been concluded by the Apapa Iganmu LCDA in conjunction with the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, Agency for Mass Education to provide mass education and skill acquisition programmes for residents.
In preparation for the take off of the programmes, four centres located at the LCDA secretariat, Obale streets, Badia Nursery/ Primary School and 7up market have been earmarked for the programme.
In his welcome address at the occasion of the year 2026 Sensitisation and Mobilization Campaign for Mass Education on Literacy, Empowerment and Community engagement held at the LCDA secretariat on Thursday, 18 June, 2026, the LCDA Chairman, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu remarked that the programme marks significant step in the collective effort to build a more enlightened, productive and prosperous community.
He emphasised that education remains the foundation of development, while employment and active community participation are the pillars upon which sustainable growth is built.
The LCDA boss stressed that the programme has been designed to empower the residents with the knowledge, skills and opportunities required to improve their socio- economic well being.
“The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of literacy, encourage participation in vocational and employment initiatives, and foster stronger community engagement among our residents.
“We believe that every individual, regardless of age, gender, or social background deserves access to opportunities that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the development of our society,” Saliu also stressed.
He therefore urged all stakeholders to become ambassadors of the initiative, spread the message to every household, encourage participation in literacy classes, support employment and skills acquisition programmes.
Speaking at the occasion, the Director, Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesanwo stated that the programme is intended for residents who could not acquire education at their youthful age.
She disclosed that the programme is fully funded by the Lagos State Government, adding that it is free of charge for all participants.
Kalesanwo commended the LCDA chairman for embracing and supporting the programme, and his commitment to youth empowerment through skill acquisition.
In her contribution, the Head Vocational Department of the Agency, Mrs. Olaide Oladunjoye hinted that the programme is made up of qualified and experienced facilitators, adding that learners will be taught in a unique, friendly and seamless manner different from the conventional school.
Informing that vocational skill is very lucrative, Oladunjoye stressed that nobody is too old to acquire education or skill acquisition, even as she added that there are incentives to make the programme attractive.
The programme had in attendance top management staff from the agency, coordinators from the Local Government Councils amongst others.
Also present at the occasion were the Secretary to the Local Government Hon. Olanrewaju Ahmed; Hon.Amona Omotayo, representing the Legislative Arm, Supervisory Councillors, and other appointees.
Stakeholders among whom were members of the Community Development Association (CDA), market men and women, artisans, people living with disability, National Youth Council of Nigeria ( NYCN) amongst others were also present.
