In recent years, Nigeria’s political landscape has witnessed an increasing trend in which public figures are subjected to campaigns aimed at discrediting their personalities rather than scrutinizing their policies and ideas. This disturbing development points to an emerging culture of calumny—a practice characterized by the deliberate spread of allegations, misinformation, and unverified claims for political advantage.
The recent controversy surrounding the alleged PhD certificate issue involving Hon. Yakubu Adamu, currently trending widely on social media, is a case in point. A careful examination of the development suggests that the matter bears the hallmarks of a calculated campaign designed to tarnish his reputation and undermine his political aspirations.
In politics, it is not uncommon for opponents to deploy allegations and misinformation as tools to discredit perceived rivals. Unfortunately, such tactics often divert public attention from substantive issues of governance, leadership, and service delivery.
The current controversy appears to fall within this unfortunate tradition of character assassination. While public office seekers must necessarily be subjected to scrutiny, such scrutiny should be guided by facts, due process, and fairness. Democracy flourishes when accountability mechanisms are grounded in evidence rather than speculation. Critics and supporters alike have the right to express their views; however, where allegations become tools of political warfare without substantiated proof, they risk crossing the line from legitimate inquiry into calumny.
In my candid assessment, Yakubu’s tenure in various public offices, including his service as Commissioner for Finance in Bauchi State, was marked by commitment, competence, and dedication to public service. Significantly, throughout his years in public office, questions about his academic credentials only emerged after he became the gubernatorial candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The timing of these allegations inevitably raises questions about the motives behind them.If I may ask: Did Hon. Yakubu Adamu submit a PhD certificate when filling out his nomination form? More importantly, is a PhD a constitutional requirement for contesting a gubernatorial election? If the answer to both questions is in the negative, then one is compelled to ask: what purpose does this inquiry serve? It is equally important to note that while academic qualifications are valuable, leadership is ultimately measured by integrity, competence, vision, and the capacity to deliver good governance.
History is replete with examples of great leaders whose legacies were defined not merely by academic titles but by their contributions to society. As political activities intensify, the electorate should not be distracted by controversies surrounding certificates, which, in my view, are not the central issues. Rather, greater attention should be paid to the track records, experience, and capacity of candidates to effectively steer the affairs of government. The electorate should therefore resist attempts to be distracted by sensational claims and instead focus on evaluating leaders based on their records of service, policy proposals, and commitment to public welfare. Political competition should be based on ideas and performance rather than campaigns of calumny designed to destroy reputations.
Beyond the current controversy, it is important to assess Yakubu’s preparedness for higher office through the lens of his public service experience. His tenure as Commissioner for Finance under the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed provided him with extensive exposure to governance, public financial management, budgeting, fiscal policy, and the implementation of development initiatives.Overseeing a state’s finances is among the most demanding responsibilities in government, requiring accountability, transparency, strategic thinking, and technical expertise. His performance in this role reflects a strong capacity to manage complex governmental responsibilities and contribute effectively to public administration.
In addition to his official responsibilities, Hon. Yakubu has been actively involved in an administration that implemented significant developmental projects and reforms. His participation in policy formulation and execution has afforded him practical governance experience that extends beyond theoretical understanding.
As a seasoned public servant who played a significant role in Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration, Yakubu possesses the requisite experience and leadership qualities needed to steer the affairs of government. His track record in public office demonstrates a firm grasp of governance issues and a readiness to build upon previous achievements for the benefit of the state and its citizens.
As the political landscape becomes increasingly active, it is expected that individuals with notable records of public service will attract heightened scrutiny and political criticism. In Yakubu’s case, however, such efforts have done little to overshadow the accomplishments and qualities that continue to distinguish him as a credible gubernatorial contender.Rather than resorting to smear campaigns and character assassination, political actors should embrace issue-based engagements that promote democratic values and foster healthy competition.
The growing support for Honourable Yakubu Adamu’s aspiration reflects the confidence many have in his leadership qualities, experience, and vision for the future. As the state looks toward the future, there is a compelling need for leadership that combines experience with vision, continuity with innovation, and service with accountability. Ultimately, the PhD saga should serve as a reminder of the dangers of politics driven by character assassination. Public discourse must rise above personal attacks and remain centered on the issues that truly matter to the people.
Yakubu, like any other public figure, deserves fairness, due process, and the opportunity to be judged on the basis of his service, competence, and vision for the future.
