BREAKING: Federation of Women Lawyers Rescues An Abandoned Infant Who Was Left At A Shrine In Abua Community

The Rivers State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has successfully rescued an abandoned infant who was left at a shrine in Abua community, Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Chairperson of FIDA in Rivers State, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, disclosed this on Tuesday while providing details of the rescue operation.

She explained that the organisation received credible information on Sunday, June 14, 2026, that a two-week-old baby boy had been abandoned in front of a local shrine in the area. According to her, the matter was promptly escalated, and the infant was rescued with the support of the police.

Life-George noted that preliminary findings and interviews with the mother revealed that she had initially left the child in the care of the father due to his inability to provide basic necessities.

She added that upon receiving the report and ensuring the safe arrival of the child, the mother, and the good Samaritans at the FIDA Legal Centre, the organisation immediately intervened to safeguard the infant’s wellbeing.

The FIDA chairperson further disclosed that emergency measures were taken, including securing the child’s immediate safety, facilitating initial medical assessments at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, and providing emergency support for the young mother to enable her to continue breastfeeding the baby.
