A planned political gathering in support of President Bola Tinubu and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has been denied access to the Jubilee Hall of Holy Ghost Cathedral after the Catholic Diocese of Enugu ruled out the use of its facilities for partisan political activities.
The event, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, July 3, at the Cathedral’s Jubilee Hall, will no longer hold at the venue following the Diocese’s decision.
In a statement signed by the Director of Communications, Fr. Anthony Aneke, the Diocese reaffirmed its longstanding policy prohibiting the use of churches, parish halls, and other Church-owned facilities for political rallies, endorsements, or campaign events.
According to the statement, permitting such an event would contradict the Church’s commitment to political neutrality.
The Diocese stressed that while the Catholic Church remains actively engaged in promoting good governance, justice, peace, and the welfare of citizens, it does not endorse political parties or candidates, nor does it allow its premises to serve as venues for partisan political activities.
It further clarified that any earlier announcement indicating that the gathering would be held at the Cathedral’s Jubilee Hall did not represent the official position of the Diocese, expressing regret over any confusion the information may have caused.
The development comes just weeks after the Diocese organised civic education programmes ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians to participate actively and responsibly in the democratic process while maintaining political neutrality.
