A lady has shared a family dispute that unfolded after her UK-based aunt reportedly exposed years of financial support for a cousin who accused her of forgetting her roots.
According to the lady, the aunt returned to Nigeria for Christmas last December and gifted every adult in the family ₦100,000. While everyone appreciated the gesture, one cousin allegedly returned two days later to request an additional ₦800,000 to start a business.
The aunt declined the request, a decision that reportedly sparked tension within the family.
WhatsApp message sparks family drama
The lady said the cousin later took to the family WhatsApp group, writing, “Some people travel abroad and forget where they came from.”
Rather than argue, the aunt responded with screenshots showing she had quietly been paying the man’s children’s school fees and house rent for the past three years.
The revelation surprised members of the family, many of whom were reportedly unaware of the extent of her financial support.
Response fuels online reactions
Instead of expressing gratitude, the cousin allegedly replied, “Was I supposed to be rolling on the floor for that?”
The lady’s account has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users debating entitlement, gratitude and the pressure often placed on relatives living abroad.
While some sympathised with the cousin’s desire to start a business, others argued that the aunt had already gone above and beyond by supporting his family for years without seeking recognition.
The story continues to fuel conversations about appreciation and expectations within extended families.
