ILISHAN-REMO, Ogun State — Babcock University has officially disowned a viral academic certificate circulating on social media and linked to Nigerian comedian and content creator Carter Efe, describing the document as fake and unauthorized.
In a statement released by the university on Monday, the management clarified that the certificate was never issued by the institution and warned members of the public against accepting or relying on it for any purpose.
According to the university, preliminary findings revealed several inconsistencies on the document, including references to a non-existent “Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club” and the use of the academic classification “First Class Upper,” which the institution said is not part of its grading system.
Babcock University explained that its Biochemistry programme is housed under the Benjamin S. Carson College of Health and Medical Sciences, while the Computer Club is an independent body under the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences.
The institution further emphasized that honorary certificates are not used to recognize undergraduate academic performance. It noted that official academic achievements are documented only through degree certificates and academic transcripts issued by the Office of the Registrar.
The fake certificate surfaced online after Carter Efe’s previous claims about graduating with a First Class degree from Babcock University resurfaced on social media. The university, however, did not confirm whether the comedian was responsible for creating or sharing the forged document.
Babcock warned that anyone involved in producing, distributing, or using forged certificates bearing its name could face both civil and criminal legal action. It also advised employers, educational institutions, government agencies, and members of the public to verify academic credentials directly with the Office of the Registrar before relying on any certificate presented.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its academic records and protecting its reputation against fraudulent activities, urging the public to disregard the viral certificate in circulation while investigations continue.
