Henry Opene to Debut Solo Art Exhibition “BECOMING” in Lagos

Nigerian visual artist and creative director, Henry Ogochukwu Opene, popularly known through his creative platform, The Ghor Brand, has announced the launch of his debut solo exhibition titled BECOMING, a compelling exploration of identity, grief, healing, and personal transformation.

Scheduled to hold in Lagos on June 20 and 21, 2026, the exhibition will showcase a collection of deeply textured mixed-media artworks that examine the emotional complexities of self-discovery and the often-unseen journey of personal growth. Through a series of evocative paintings, BECOMING invites viewers into conversations around silence, resilience, memory, forgiveness, and the gradual process of becoming one’s authentic self.

Drawing inspiration from his personal experiences while connecting to universal human emotions, Opene’s works reflect how individuals are shaped by societal expectations, survival instincts, life experiences, and the pursuit of self-definition. The exhibition follows recurring emotional themes and fragmented human figures that symbolize restraint, awakening, healing, and transformation.

Renowned for his distinctive visual style, Opene employs heavy impasto acrylic techniques, layered textures, stitched materials, and symbolic figurative imagery to create artworks that carry both emotional depth and physical presence. His pieces are designed to evoke reflection, allowing audiences to connect with the stories and emotions embedded within each work.

Born and raised between Asaba and Agbor in Delta State, Opene grew up in an environment where creativity coexisted with discipline and societal expectations. Before fully embracing fine art, he built a successful career in design and visual communication, collaborating with leading brands such as Sterling Bank, Nigerian Breweries, and Canon through creative agencies including Anakle and Verdant Zeal.

He later founded Ghor Designs, an independent visual communication studio operating under The Ghor Brand. Through the studio, he has led creative projects for notable clients including the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Myfood by Hilda, Vixx Interiors, and Trap Door Enugu.

In 2023, Opene made the significant decision to step away from full-time client work to focus entirely on painting, a passion he describes as a lifelong calling. That decision ultimately laid the foundation for BECOMING, his first solo exhibition.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the project, Opene explained that the exhibition centers on the subtle emotional shifts that define personal transformation rather than dramatic life-changing moments.

“BECOMING is about the quiet process of leaving behind versions of ourselves shaped by fear, performance, and survival,” he said. “It is about learning to hear your own voice after years of living through the expectations of others.”

The exhibition will feature approximately fifteen artworks, including large-scale figurative paintings and intimate mixed-media studies, offering visitors an immersive artistic experience that examines the complexities of identity and growth.

The event will take place at Anakle, The Ford Center, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, with an opening reception scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The Ghor Brand is a multidisciplinary contemporary African art and design practice founded by Henry Ogochukwu Opene, dedicated to exploring storytelling, identity, and human experience through visual art and design.
