An Ikwerre woman has shared a troubling experience, alleging that she nearly lost her job for insisting that she is Ikwerre and not Igbo.
According to her, the pressure to identify as Igbo came from colleagues and superiors who insisted on categorising her based on their own ethnic assumptions.
The Ikwerre people, who are indigenous to Rivers State, have long faced pressure to identify as Igbo, despite their distinct language, culture, and political identity.
The woman’s testimony has sparked widespread debate, with many echoing her concerns about ethnic domination and the erasure of minority identities.
