Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and summoned all senators to an emergency plenary session as concerns continue to grow over the worsening security situation across the country.
The emergency sitting, scheduled to hold at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, was convened on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio following reports of escalating insecurity and other pressing national challenges requiring immediate legislative attention.
A notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate informed lawmakers that the session would focus primarily on the country’s security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, attacks on communities, and other threats to national stability.
The decision marks a significant departure from the Senate’s earlier legislative calendar. Lawmakers had adjourned plenary and were expected to resume after the recess. However, the increasing security concerns across several states prompted the leadership of the upper legislative chamber to reconvene members ahead of schedule.
Security has remained one of Nigeria’s most pressing issues, with recent incidents of violent attacks, kidnappings, and assaults on security personnel raising concerns among citizens and stakeholders. Several lawmakers and public officials have repeatedly called for urgent measures to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
