Once a foreman at a construction site, Mutua also ran a side business selling and transporting construction stones.
Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, the father of four tearfully recalled the fateful day he was buried alive by falling stones and earth, and the shocking circumstances under which he was mistakenly declared dead.
Friendly competition turns into a nightmare
Mutua noted that he had worked at the quarry for 10 to 15 years, never imagining that his life would change forever on January 4, 2022.

“That day, my wife was unwell, so I made breakfast for her and our twins before leaving for work at around 8:30 am,” he recalled. “When I arrived, the other labourers were already there, so I assigned them their duties for the day.”
As the shift went on, Mutua made a friendly bet with one of his colleagues to see who could harvest more stone.
“We used to compete a lot, so we were deciding on what the challenge would be for that day. We wagered on the volume of stone we could extract. I had about 250 feet done and he had 270 feet, so we were just competing as usual,” he stated.
How was Mutua buried alive in a quarry?
However, at around 3:00 pm, light drizzle began to fall, marking the onset of his tribulations. The rain persisted, growing increasingly intense until about 6:30 pm, eventually forcing the men to huddle against the quarry walls for shelter.
Mutua recalled feeling a small impact from above, which he initially dismissed, assuming some of his workers were still moving around at the top of the cliff.
“We were still sitting down there when I turned around and noticed darkness starting to fall. It wasn’t the night, it was the wall collapsing on top of us. As I tried to stand up, the earth crashed onto my back, burying me and everything around us. From then on, all we could see was darkness through the haze, and my entire body was in agonising pain.”

He narrated how he felt a suffocating mixture of pebbles, soil, and heavy stone pinning his body down as he desperately struggled to free himself. Still in shock, he realised he was buried up to his neck. He tried to lift himself, completely unaware of the catastrophic injuries his body had just sustained.
“My spinal cord was shattered, and I collapsed onto my stomach with my legs twisted behind me. I couldn’t feel anything below my waist. There was just a loud buzzing sound in my ears, a thick haze, and then I was hit heavily on the head.”
When rescue teams finally arrived to dig him and his friend out from the debris, they began excavating from his back, mistakenly assuming he was standing upright. Tragically, because his legs were already broken, the tools dislocated his limbs further. Blood began to ooze heavily as his legs were forced completely backward.
Upon seeing the blood, the rescuers realised they were inadvertently hurting him. They abandoned their tools, using their bare hands to frantically claw away the soil until they finally pulled him free and rushed him to the hospital.
Did Mutua die in hospital?
Mutua went on to recall the agonising series of surgeries he underwent to repair his legs, liver, and fractured ribs. However, during a high-stakes operation to repair his damaged lungs at the Kenyatta National Hospital, his organs suddenly failed, and he was declared clinically dead.

“I was told the heart monitors went flat. They hastily stapled my open wounds closed, decided I was gone, and broke the news to my family. They then transferred my body to the city mortuary,” Mutua stated.
The father of four vividly remembers the terrifying moment he regained consciousness at around 3:00 am in a profoundly cold room. He was gripped by an overwhelming chill and a desperate thirst for water. Looking around through the gloom, he could see several stark, bodies lying motionless beside him.
At that moment, the trauma left him completely unaware that he was in a morgue. He even raised his voice, asking the figure closest to him to pass him some water because he could not move.
“Everyone had no clothes on, and me too, but for some reason, the reality didn’t register. I honestly thought the person next to me was just being mean and refusing to help. Then I touched my stomach and felt a faint warmth. I was in immense pain, and my blood still felt warm,” he said.
The shocked morticians and an unexpected ‘resurrection’
The following morning, when the morticians arrived for their shift, they were horrified to hear a voice speaking from the tables. In a state of sheer panic and confusion, they struck him, breaking his jaw.

Meanwhile, back at home, his grieving family had already begun funeral arrangements, entirely unaware that he had just survived the unthinkable.
“The morticians quickly wheeled me out on a trolley, and I found myself back in a hospital bed yet again, having my body stitched back together. It was a miracle that I survived, but I was left completely paralysed, and I still need another surgery on my liver if I am to live longer,” he noted.
Jonathan Mutua pleads for help
Today, Mutua relies entirely on his second wife for his survival, including basic hygiene, as he has completely lost the use of his legs. The ongoing cost of adult diapers has plunged the family into severe financial distress.
“Now I am confined to a wheelchair. I cannot go out to work to provide for my ailing mother and my wife. I still need medical intervention to prolong my lifespan. I feel utterly desperate, and I truly need help,” Mutua pleaded.
