Man sparks debate after questioning billionaire employer over domestic worker’s welfare

A Nigerian man has sparked debate online after sharing an encounter with a domestic worker during a visit to a friend’s residence in Banana Island, Lagos.

Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, he revealed that he met a woman identified as Rejoice, who has allegedly been working as a cleaner in the household since 2021.

Surprised to find her still in the same role years later, he decided to ask how life had been treating her after seeing the condition of her two children.

“Rejoice, you never comot for here? Since 2021 you still dey here? I see say you don get children and more responsibilities. Wetin you don achieve for yourself since all these years?” he recalled asking.

The man said he noticed the woman appeared burdened with responsibilities. Curious about her progress, he asked whether she had plans to start a business of her own.

According to him, the woman disclosed that she had no savings to begin a business despite years of working in the affluent household.

“She told me she still didn’t have money to start any business. When I asked how much she was earning, she said between ₦150,000 and ₦180,000 monthly. I was shocked. I said, ‘He’s paying you ₦150,000 per month? Come on now, where is your conscience?’” he added.

The revelation has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians debating fair salaries for domestic workers and whether wealthy employers should do more to support long-serving staff.

One user wrote, “₦150k is not small money, but Lagos is expensive.” Another added, “The employer is paying a salary, not running a charity.”
