On any given day, patients turn to doctors for advice on how to live healthier lives. Yet for many healthcare professionals, finding time to care for themselves can be one of the hardest prescriptions to follow.

For Dr Richard Mwangi, that reality became personal. A few years ago, the Nairobi-based doctor found himself weighing 112 kilograms.

Today, he weighs 81 kilograms. The remarkable 31-kilogram transformation did not happen overnight.
It came through consistent cycling, regular exercise, healthier eating habits and a conscious decision to take control of his wellbeing.
Father’s Day cycling event
What started as a personal journey has since evolved into a movement that is inspiring doctors across Kenya to rethink their relationship with health and fitness.
“I always tell my colleagues that you don’t have to be an athlete. You just have to start,” Dr Mwangi says.
That simple message has become the foundation of the Doctors Of Hearing – Kenya Cycling Club, a rapidly growing community of healthcare professionals who are discovering the benefits of movement, friendship and wellness beyond hospital walls.
On Saturday, June 27, the club played a prominent role during the inaugural Doctor Dads Father’s Day Walkathon 2026 held at the Public Service Club in Nairobi’s Upper Hill.
Why Mwangi wants colleagues to keep fit
The event brought together hundreds of doctors, their families and wellness advocates for a day dedicated to healthy living.

While some participants completed five, 10 and 15-kilometre walks and runs, members of the cycling club took on a challenging 30-kilometre ride through Nairobi.
For Dr Mwangi, seeing fellow doctors cycling through the city represented something much bigger than fitness. It was evidence that a cultural shift is taking place within Kenya’s medical profession.
For decades, physician burnout, stress and poor work-life balance have quietly affected healthcare workers across the country.
Long shifts, emergency calls and demanding workloads often leave little room for exercise or self-care. The consequences can be serious.
Doctors face many of the same risks as their patients, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes and stress-related illnesses.
Recognising this challenge, Dr Mwangi began encouraging colleagues to join him on weekend cycling rides.
