“After an impromptu check of their bags, I confiscated alcohol disguised as juice. They had sprayed perfume for the obvious reason of concealing the smell of alcohol. I became suspicious after the girls started behaving strangely,” she said.

As punishment, Murimi asked the students to write handwritten apology letters after they were caught with the drinks.

She later shared photos of the letters online, showing the disciplinary approach she took after the students broke school rules.

Jane Murimi’s encounter with students at chemist

“I asked them to write apology letters. There were ten of them, by the way. I also learned that some of them take alcohol, and their parents are unaware. One told me, ‘I pretend to have a headache, then I sleep. Mum can never know.’ That is a bit worrying,” she added.

Murimi further revealed that during the previous holiday, she found some students at a chemist purchasing pregnancy pills, a discovery that left her concerned.

She said she opened a discussion with them about the dangers of their actions in an effort to guide and educate them.

“I held a brief talk with them, and somehow they trusted me. When I asked about STIs and HIV, they responded that avoiding pregnancy was more important. Those students were between 14 and 17 years old. As teachers, it can be overwhelming, but we continue trying to mould them,” she added.

Kenyans react to Jane Murimi’s post

Social media users flocked to the comment section to react to Murimi’s revelations about teenage alcoholism and pregnancy concerns.

Zarou Martin Kariuki:

“Anyone who has not met these high schoolers in real life, away from their parents, has no idea who they really are or what they are capable of.”

Crispus Benjamin:

“I know this story very well. In fact, they told me they get drunk. One even claimed she took the alcohol from her father’s cabinet, yet the parents are teetotalers. This made me believe they have a clique where they meet and share liquor. I’m glad they somehow reformed.”
