No Law Bars Me From Owning Foreign House — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations suggesting he owns properties in the United States, insisting that even if such claims were true, no law prevents him from acquiring property abroa

Wike, who spoke during his monthly media chat on Monday in Abuja, also took a swipe at activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of circulating unverified claims against public officials.

Reacting directly to the allegations, Wike said Sowore had repeatedly failed to substantiate his claims about alleged properties linked to him in Florida, United States.

“Sowore comes and sells all kinds of stories to you. Up till now, why hasn’t he talked about the houses he claims I have in Florida? Where are they till today?” the minister queried.

He further challenged the credibility of the claims, warning against what he described as deliberate misinformation targeted at government officials.

“You can’t begin to peddle rumours against government officials; it’s not correct,” he said.

Wike maintained that there is no legal restriction preventing any Nigerian public office holder from owning property outside the country, but firmly denied ownership of any such property.

“There is no law that says I shouldn’t own a house anywhere. However, I don’t have a house there,” he stated.

The minister’s remarks come amid renewed public exchanges between government officials and critics over allegations of asset ownership and transparency.

The exchange also adds to the growing tension between the FCT Minister and Sowore, who has been vocal in his criticism of political office holders and governance issues in the country.
