Photo of Rachel Ruto in tears during service of Utumishi Girls students who died in inferno emerges

A photo has emerged of First Lady Rachel Ruto in tears during the requiem mass of the 16 students of Utumishi Girls who were killed in an inferno started by their fellow students.

Utumishi Girls suffered the deadly inferno, which started at around midnight, with the dormitory said to have been locked from the outside.

The government noted that there were 808 students in school, and 79 of them were injured, while 16 died in the fire.

Nine students linked to the tragic dormitory fire at the institution were arraigned in a Naivasha court.

Arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects are expected to face arson and murder-related charges after confessing that they started the fire due to grievances over rescheduled exam dates and new event fees.

During the memorial services, parents and those who were in attendance were seen breaking down as each casket held a photo of the bodies of the students.

The sombre mood saw many of the parents being held by safety officials who were present to offer first aid services to those emotionally overwhelmed.

Rachel, who was in attendance, was captured at one point wiping her tears while sitting next to Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and Senator Tabitha Karanja.

The First Lady looked down for a moment as she took in all the emotions of the parents who were weeping for their children who had died under painful circumstances.

She donned a print outfit and her new signature braid style as she showed up to support the grieving families.
