The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who was allegedly assaulted after disciplining a pupil in Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state.
Usman reportedly died days after she was attacked by the father of the pupil she had disciplined.
According to reports, the pupil sustained an arm injury after falling during the punishment. Angered by the incident, the child’s father allegedly stormed the teacher’s residence with two other individuals and assaulted her.
Daily Trust further reported that source said Usman was attacked again later the same day by additional individuals while she was on her way to the mosque.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, June 28, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, said a case of culpable homicide was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that on June 18, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, 30, for disciplining a pupil,” the statement read.
“The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on June 25, 2026.”

Afusat said police operatives visited both the scene of the incident where the teacher was assaulted and the deceased’s residence after the report was received, where necessary documentation was carried out.
She added that arrangements were being made to move the body to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for an autopsy.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.
“Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” she said.
Meanwhile, security analyst Zagazola Makama had earlier reported that the incident stemmed from disciplinary action taken by the teacher against the pupil, which allegedly led to a violent confrontation with the child’s father. Usman later succumbed to the injuries she sustained during the attacks.
Her death has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of teachers, as well as the growing incidents of violence against educators in the course of their duties.
