Teachers Flood Ikeja Streets in Protest as NUT Demands Rescue of Abducted Victims

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday staged a peaceful solidarity rally in Ikeja, Lagos State, to protest the recent kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oyo State, as concern continues to mount over worsening insecurity in the education sector.

The rally, which drew teachers from various parts of Lagos, began early in the morning and saw participants marching through major roads in Ikeja before converging at key government locations. The demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions calling for urgent government intervention, improved school security, and the immediate rescue of abducted victims.

According to the union, the action was part of a broader national response by educators following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State. The NUT described the incident as deeply troubling and warned that repeated attacks on schools could have severe consequences on the academic calendar and discourage school attendance across the country.

Union leaders at the rally emphasized that teachers were not only demanding the safe return of their colleagues and students but also calling for long-term security reforms to prevent future occurrences. They urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen surveillance in rural and vulnerable school communities.

The protest comes amid heightened tension in Oyo State, where education activities have been disrupted following the abduction incident. Reports indicate that teachers in some affected areas have downed tools in solidarity with their colleagues, while parents continue to express fear over the safety of their children.
