Trump names close ally Bill Pulte as acting US intelligence chief

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the appointment of housing regulator Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, placing a key ally at the helm of the country’s intelligence apparatus.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted Pulte’s role in overseeing major financial institutions and praised his handling of matters related to market stability. The president noted that more than $10 trillion at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had increased significantly under Pulte’s watch compared with a year ago.

Pulte currently heads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and has attracted attention for urging the Justice Department to investigate several prominent figures who have clashed with Trump politically. However, he has not publicly demonstrated significant experience in national security affairs.
Among those referred by Pulte for alleged mortgage fraud were New York Attorney General Letitia James, Representative Eric Swalwell, Senator Adam Schiff and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. He also made similar allegations against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
All five individuals rejected the accusations levelled against them. While James was charged following an investigation, the case was later dismissed by a federal judge.

The referrals sparked criticism from opponents, who argued that the administration was using federal agencies to pursue political adversaries. The Government Accountability Office subsequently launched an inquiry into whether Pulte had exceeded or misused his authority.

Trump said Pulte would continue in his existing positions while serving as acting director of national intelligence. A permanent appointment to the post would require approval from the Senate.

The move follows Tulsi Gabbard’s announcement in late May that she would step down from the role of director of national intelligence.
