WhatsApp Exchange Shown at Madlanga Commission Reveals Cat Matlala Told Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk—“My Person Will Be National Commissioner”

The Madlanga Commission on Monday heard evidence from WhatsApp chats between alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk.

The messages were presented by chief evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson as part of the commission’s ongoing proceedings examining matters related to senior police leadership.

Among the messages shown to the commission was a forwarded report containing claims by an investigator that the National Commissioner appeared nervous and was shaking.

The report also claimed that the collapse of Crime Intelligence was blamed at Lieutenant General Khumalo and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

After receiving the forwarded message, Van Wyk replied, “Not good.” Matlala responded that the developments were “actually good” because “my person is going to be a National Commissioner now.” Van Wyk then replied that he remembered Matlala previously telling him something similar.

The WhatsApp exchange formed part of the documentary evidence placed before the commission by Chaskalson.

The messages were presented during Monday’s proceedings and added to the record as the commission continued hearing evidence.
