A family in Busia County has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of their 26-year-old daughter, Laura Wesonga.

Laura allegedly died after she was shot by a police officer when she found herself caught in the crossfire between police officers and suspected gang members in Busia town.

The young woman was on her way home from the gym when the incident occurred in the Marachi area on Sunday, June 29.

Laura is said to have suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, which led to her death.

Her father, Albert Wesonga, spoke through his grief, describing his daughter as a hardworking, humble and respectful young woman.

What did Laura Wesonga’s dad say?

Albert also pleaded with the government and relevant authorities to help him find justice for his beloved daughter.

“It is very painful to comprehend. My daughter was a very peaceful person. She even went to Lebanon for work and returned, and now she is no more. She was the hope of my family. I am deeply heartbroken by her death,” he said.

He also recounted the desperate efforts made to save Laura’s life after the shooting, saying a boda boda rider rushed her to a nearby hospital.

However, by the time he arrived, she had already succumbed to her injuries.

“My daughter would never even go to protests. I keep wondering how a trained officer could shoot an innocent, harmless person who only had her phone in her hand,” said the grieving father.

Residents have called on the police and local leaders to find a lasting solution to the rising cases of insecurity in Busia and curb the activities of criminal gangs terrorising residents.

Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, who also mourned the young woman, condemned criminal activities in the county, saying no offender would be spared.

“Let us make sure there is no crisis in Busia and talk to our youth to avoid cases of killings, robbery and destruction of property,” he said.
