Fresh controversy has emerged over the death of Mary Habila, the woman who reportedly died at the private village residence of the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, after activist Charles Ogbu shared an affidavit purportedly filed by her father, showing that the family has formally withdrawn from the case and asked authorities to halt further investigations.
The affidavit, deposed by Mr. Tanko Habila Wisdom at the High Court Registry in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, states that the family does not suspect any foul play in Mary’s death and no longer wishes to pursue the matter. He also requested that his daughter’s body be released for burial.
According to the document, the father stated:
“That I also wish not to proceed further with the investigation.”
He further declared:
“That I will not honour subsequent invitation either to the Police or Court in respect of this case as my family is not suspecting any foul play.”
The affidavit also disclosed that the Minister of Works had requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but the family rejected the request and appealed that no medical or investigative procedures be carried out on the body.
Sharing the document on Facebook, Charles Ogbu questioned why the family would withdraw from the investigation despite reports that the Ebonyi State Ministry of Justice had allegedly established that the death was unnatural and deserved a thorough investigation. He argued that the circumstances surrounding the affidavit had raised serious concerns and suggested that the matter should not end with the family’s decision.
