Ebonyi Repatriates 28 Trafficked Children, Announces Rehabilitation Plans

At least 28 children allegedly trafficked for child labour to Otolo, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, have been repatriated by the Ebonyi State Government.

The repatriation was carried out in collaboration with the office of the governor’s wife, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru.

The development was disclosed in a press statement released on Wednesday night by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, who confirmed that the children were currently under the ministry’s care.

To ensure their full recovery, the Ministry of Women Affairs, backed by the state government and the office of the governor’s wife, will oversee a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

This initiative includes providing skills acquisition training, re-enrolling school-aged children into the education system, and safely reuniting them with their respective families.

Nwamkpuma emphasised that the ministry remains proactive, in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs, to guarantee the protection of women and children through sustained investments in social protection, child welfare, and human development.

”We remain resolute in ensuring that every Ebonyi child grows up in safety, dignity, and hope.

“We therefore call on members of the public to remain vigilant and partner with the government by promptly reporting cases of child trafficking, abuse, exploitation, or any form of violence against women and children,” the statement read in part.

The government further appealed to school-aged Ebonyi children currently engaged in hawking outside the state to return home and benefit from the free basic education and enabling environment established under Governor Nwifuru’s leadership.

”Together, we will build a safer and greater Ebonyi for all,” it added.
