Nwabali rejoins Chippa United after five months of quiting club

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a return to South African club Chippa United ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, five months after leaving the Premier Soccer League side.

The 30-year-old returns to the Eastern Cape club after spending several months without competitive football following his departure in February 2026. His absence from regular club action also affected his involvement with Nigeria’s senior national team.

Chippa United confirmed the goalkeeper’s return on Sunday through its official social media platforms.

The club welcomed Nwabali back with a message to supporters, saying: “Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome @nwabali32 back to the Chilli Boys.”

In a separate statement, Chippa United added: “After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club.”

The move marks the beginning of a second spell for the Nigerian international, who first joined Chippa United in 2022 and established himself as one of the club’s key players.

Fresh opportunity for Super Eagles keeper

Nwabali’s reputation rose significantly after his impressive performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he played a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles reach the final before finishing runners-up.

However, his exit from Chippa United earlier this year left him without regular first-team football, limiting his opportunities to remain active at club level. The lack of competitive matches also affected his standing with the national team during that period.

His return offers the experienced goalkeeper an opportunity to rebuild his career through consistent playing time in the South African top flight.

With the new season approaching, Nwabali will be expected to compete for the number one shirt and help Chippa United improve their fortunes in the Premier Soccer League.

The goalkeeper will also be hoping that regular appearances at club level strengthen his chances of earning a recall to the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria prepares for upcoming international fixtures.
