The Senate on Tuesday slammed the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, over his request to United Nations (UN) to probe the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
He called on the UN and international human rights organisations to conduct an independent investigation into the abduction.
The schoolchildren and teachers were kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.
They were rescued after spending 56 days.
Senate’s rebuke to Makinde was sequel to the motion sponsored by the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, who commended Nigeria’s security agencies for their efforts in rescuing the abducted students and teachers.
He said that the abduction represented a disturbing expansion of organised criminals into the South West geopolitical zone of the country.
Bamidele chronicled the swift action of security agencies immediately the children and teachers were abducted.
This, he said, followed directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
