Sophie Jenkin said she initially feared something terrible had happened when her two-year-old cat, Wilbur, appeared covered in an unexpected shade of cyan.
Adding to the comedy of the situation, Wilbur is actually female despite her traditionally male name.
“Wilbur is actually a girl, but we thought it was a boy, so we named her Wilbur. But it’s a girl, and it’s now blue,” the 32-year-old joked.
Sophie expressed that she thought something nasty had happened at first, or that kids were abusing cats in the neighbourhood.

How cat got blue dye
The mystery was quickly solved when a woman living just a few doors away recognised the likely culprit.
It emerged that neighbour Hollie Jenkinson had recently hosted a gender reveal party in her garden.
During the celebration, children kicked footballs filled with blue corn starch to reveal that the family is expecting a boy.
“I guess it’s a boy,” Sophie laughed after learning the source of Wilbur’s colourful makeover.
Despite finding the incident hilarious, Sophie took precautions after several social media users warned that the blue powder could potentially be harmful to animals.
She promptly bathed Wilbur and was later reassured by Hollie that the substance was simply cornstarch.
“It’s hilarious. It’s so funny. Everyone at home and at work is cracked up,” Sophie said. “But all was well in the end. England won the football, my cat was blue, and everyone found it funny.”

Meanwhile, Hollie was equally amused when she realised her celebration had accidentally transformed a neighbour’s pet into a blue feline.
The unexpected twist came hours later when a relative sent her a screenshot from a local community Facebook page showing a confused cat owner asking why her pet had suddenly turned blue.
“I immediately burst into laughter when I realised that her cat must have been rolling around in the leftover corn starch in my garden,” Hollie said.
Fortunately, after several baths, Wilbur’s temporary blue rinse has completely disappeared, and she has returned to her usual tabby self.
For Hollie, the incident has become an unforgettable footnote to an already special family occasion.
While gender reveal parties often produce surprises, few can claim to have accidentally revealed the colour of the neighbour’s cat as well.
