World Cup: Madueke under pressure after England display

England winger Noni Madueke faces growing pressure to keep his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting line-up after a disappointing display in the Three Lions’ 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

Madueke started on the right wing but was replaced at half-time as England recovered to reach the semi-finals, where they will face Argentina for a place in the World Cup final.

The Arsenal forward struggled to influence the contest during his 45 minutes on the pitch.

According to match statistics, Madueke recorded 28 touches and completed all of his passes, although most were played sideways or backwards.

The 24-year-old failed to create a single chance, completed just 33 per cent of his dribbles, delivered only 33 per cent of his crosses successfully and managed one pass into the final third.

He also won 50 per cent of his ground duels, committed one foul and was caught offside once before being substituted at the interval.

His replacement proved part of a much-improved England performance as Jude Bellingham scored twice to send the Three Lions into the last four.

Former England captain Alan Shearer was among those left unimpressed by Madueke’s performance.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Shearer said: “We need more from the right-hand side.

“How many times have we seen the ball switched out there?”

He added: “Six? Seven? And we have seen very little from Madueke in terms of crosses into the box.”

Madueke’s display has intensified the debate over England’s right-wing position ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final against defending champions Argentina.

Tuchel must now decide whether to retain faith in the Arsenal winger or make changes as England bid to reach the FIFA World Cup final.
