The Federal Government has quietly added new infrastructure projects worth approximately N487.56 billion to the revised 2026 national budget, signalling a major boost for rail and road development across the country.

The fresh allocations, which were not included in the original budget proposal presented by President Bola Tinubu in December 2025, emerged in the final version approved by the National Assembly.

According to details contained in the House of Representatives Order Paper and the 2026 Abridged Budget Call Circular, the new projects focus heavily on urban light rail systems and key transport corridors.

Major Allocations:Lagos Green Line Light Rail, N170 billion (largest single allocation, as counterpart funding under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Programme)

Kaduna Light Rail — N125 billion

Kano Light Rail — N120 billion

Ogun State Light Rail — N50 billion

Other provisions include:

N4 billion each for feasibility studies of light rail systems in Enugu and Maiduguri

N5.6 billion for a nationwide narrow gauge rail assessment

N8.96 billion for feasibility studies on the Calabar–Maiduguri corridor and the proposed Maiduguri–Sokoto superhighway

These additions reflect the government’s renewed push to expand mass transit infrastructure in major cities and improve connectivity between northern and southern regions.

The 2026 budget, themed “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” was originally proposed at N58.18 trillion but has seen significant expansion in capital projects following legislative review.

The new rail and highway initiatives are expected to create jobs, ease urban congestion, and stimulate economic activity in key corridors.
