FIFA has confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has completed a change of sporting nationality from England to Nigeria, clearing the way for him to represent the Super Eagles at senior level.

A check on FIFA’s change of association platform showed that the world football governing body has approved Arthur Okonkwo’s nationality switch from England to Nigeria.

The goalkeeper, a product of Arsenal’s academy, previously featured for England at youth levels from U15 through U18 before deciding to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Nigeria’s football authorities sought formal clearance from FIFA as a precaution, despite the fact all of Okonkwo’s appearances for the Young Lions came in friendly matches. The move mirrors the situation of Felix Agu, who debuted for Nigeria without clearance after never playing competitive games for Germany youth sides.

The Nigeria Football Federation had tracked Okonkwo for years, with former president Amaju Pinnick once recommending him to then coach Gernot Rohr, who felt the goalkeeper needed more top-level experience at the time.

His rise since then has been steady. Now playing for Wrexham, the 24-year-old has impressed across the English leagues and in Austria with Sturm Graz. This season he has kept ten clean sheets in 37 league matches for the promotion-chasing side.

Born in London to Nigerian parents from Anambra State, Okonkwo becomes eligible for selection immediately ahead of the next international window.

Head coach Éric Chelle is expected to name several fringe players for May’s Unity Cup, where Nigeria will defend their title against Iran and Jamaica.

The Super Eagles also face Poland and Portugal in friendlies in June, fixtures that could offer Okonkwo an early opportunity to stake his claim for a long-term role in Nigeria’s goal.
