Suspected bandits have reportedly kidnapped a retired senior military officer, Major General Rabe Abubakar, and his wife along the Matazu axis of Katsina State.
Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, was said to be travelling to Katsina with his wife when armed men intercepted their vehicle and whisked them away to an unknown destination.
Reports said the driver managed to escape from the attack after sustaining gunshot wounds. The vehicle, a red Peugeot 504, was later recovered and reportedly taken to the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters.
The incident has sparked fresh concern over the worsening insecurity in Katsina and other parts of the North-West, where residents and travellers continue to face attacks, kidnappings, and armed violence.
As of the time of this report, security agencies were yet to issue a full official statement on the abduction, but calls are growing for urgent action to secure the release of the retired general and his wife.
