The Ministry of Education has announced the closure of public and private primary and secondary schools ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
According to an official statement released by the ministry, all boarding schools across the affected states are to proceed on holiday beginning from Saturday, May 23, 2026, while academic activities are expected to resume on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The ministry further stated that students in day schools are to commence the Sallah break from Friday, May 22, 2026, and return to school on Monday, June 1, 2026, after the Eid festivities.
Education authorities advised parents and guardians to ensure that boarding students are picked up on time and returned promptly on the approved resumption dates to avoid disruption of academic activities.
The statement explained that the temporary closure is part of efforts to allow Muslim students, teachers, and families to fully participate in the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, one of the most significant festivals observed by Muslims around the world.
School administrators were also directed to strictly comply with the approved holiday schedule, while security and safety measures were encouraged during the holiday period.
The Ministry of Education used the opportunity to extend warm Eid-el-Kabir greetings to students, teachers, parents, and Nigerians at large, praying for peace, unity, and continued progress in the country.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated by Muslims to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command. The celebration is usually marked with prayers, charity, family gatherings, and the sharing of meals with loved ones and the less privileged.
