Senator Victor Umeh, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has reacted to recent comments made by Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed concerning the possibility of a joint presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in the 2027 general elections, especially the claim that such a ticket may not receive support from the northern region of Nigeria.
Umeh made his position known during an interview on SYMFONI TV, where he addressed ongoing political conversations about possible opposition alliances ahead of the next election cycle. He argued that individual opinions should not be mistaken for the collective view of an entire geopolitical region, stressing the importance of respecting political diversity within the North.
He said: “For him to now say that the North will not support Peter Obi, I would like him to say that he will not support Peter Obi. He is entitled to it, but he will not speak for the entire north.”
Umeh maintained that it was inappropriate for any political actor to generalise the stance of a vast and politically diverse region like the North based on personal perspective.
